REHABILITATION

Mercy Ships is engaging in the following rehabilitation projects:

Mobility Matters

Project Goal: To improve the mobility and function of 500 persons with mobility impairments in Kambia-Moyamba Districts and Western Area of Sierra Leone by December 2008.

Project Obectives: Provide 500 persons with mobility impairments with physiotherapy assessments/reassessments and perform 1500 PT treatments.  Provide 200 occupational therapy assessments and treatments.  Make 8 trips to chosen communities in Kambia and Moyamba Districts.  Distribute 150 Personal Energy Transportation PETs, 200 wheelchairs, and 250 crutches. Produce and fit 145 prosthesis and orthosis. Repair 150 prosthesis and orthosis, and 100 crutches, wheelchairs, and other devices. Make 100 special adaptations to devices and manufacture 50 special devices (hand splints, standing frames, and walking frames).  Conduct 800 counseling sessions with mobility-impaired persons and caregivers.  Train 500 escorts/caregivers on simple physiotherapy exercises. Conduct 60 sensitization talks on causes, management, and prevention of diseases.

Integrate to Educate Health Initiatives Program

Project Goal: To integrate 428 mobility-impaired children into local mainstream public schools and communities, improving their access to education, and psychosocial support.

Project Objectives: Facilitate attendance of 428 mobility-impaired children in 102 local mainstream schools with school support grants for enrollment fees, school supplies, uniforms, and shoes. Provide 428 mobility-impaired children with assistive devices and equipment to facilitate mobility, seating, and classroom functioning. Allow physical access to at least 2 schools for children with mobility impairments through assessment and structural adaptations (ramps and handrails). Train 60 teachers, parents, and community leaders to help facilitate the integration of disabled children into their classroom and community. Facilitate and support at least 4 interactive, psychosocial support groups for families and communities of disabled children operating in target communities.
